Most hiring managers will tell you the same thing: they decide whether to keep reading a CV within about thirty seconds. In that short window they are not just scanning for skills. They are also forming a judgement about how careful, organised and reliable you are likely to be. A misplaced date or a half-finished sentence quietly suggests that your attention to detail might be shaky — and for many roles, that is enough to move your application to the no pile.
The encouraging news is that almost every mistake in this article is easy to fix. None of them require years of extra experience. They simply require an hour of honest, methodical editing before you hit send.
Recruiters use dates to build a timeline of your career, and anything that does not add up creates doubt. If your CV says you left one role in March 2021 but started the next in June 2021, they will wonder what happened in between — and if you have not explained it, they may assume the worst.
Getting the chronology right also helps computer systems that many UK employers use to screen applications. If a system cannot parse your dates, your CV may be filtered out before a human ever sees it.
This is the single most common weakness in British CVs. Lists of duties tell a hiring manager what you were expected to do, not what you actually delivered. Compare these two lines:
The second version gives a reader something concrete to picture. It also gives them a reason to interview you. Wherever you can, add a number: the size of the budget you managed, the number of customers you dealt with each week, the percentage you improved a process by, or the value of the accounts you handled.
If your role genuinely had no measurable outcomes, describe the context instead. "Handled up to 80 customer calls a day in a busy contact centre, consistently meeting a 90% satisfaction score" is far more persuasive than "answered the phone".
Your contact block should be boring and flawless. Check that your email address is professional — a sensible first-name-and-surname combination beats anything involving nicknames or numbers. Make sure your phone number is correct, since a mistyped digit means you never hear back and never know why.
You do not need to include your date of birth, marital status or a photograph on a UK CV, and doing so can look dated. What you do need is a short personal statement at the top of around three or four lines. Avoid empty phrases such as "hard-working team player seeking a challenging role". Instead, say what you do, how long you have done it, and what you are looking for next. Something like "Customer service supervisor with six years' experience in retail banking, looking to move into team management" gives the reader a clear anchor.
A clean layout is not about looking pretty. It is about being effortless to read on a screen and easy for software to scan. Keep to two pages unless you have a genuinely long career or an academic CV. Use clear headings, a consistent font such as Calibri or Arial at 10–12pt, and generous white space.
If you send the same CV to fifty employers, expect roughly the same response rate as sending none. Take ten minutes to mirror the language of each job advert. If they ask for "stakeholder management" and you have done exactly that, use their phrase rather than "liaising with colleagues". This helps both the human reader and any screening software.
Then proofread properly. Read your CV aloud, or better still, ask someone else to read it. Spellcheck will not catch "manger" instead of "manager", and it certainly will not notice that you have written the same job twice. Leave it overnight if you can, then check it once more before you send it.
Ultimately, a strong CV is not about impressing anyone with clever wording. It is about removing every small reason for doubt so that your genuine experience gets the attention it deserves. Fix the details, and the interviews will follow.
Your personal statement should summarise your degree, key skills, and career aims in a concise paragraph that encourages further reading.
